euro peers - Results of the project

euro peers provided the starting point for consolidating and institutionalising the network activities of euro net. The project enabled quality-oriented communication to develop at the network level. The results of the project encouraged the participating institutions and regions to instigate a further European project, namely euro net – Guidelines Development, which was conducted between 1998 and 1999.

In evaluating euro peers at the concrete project level, the project participants established that not only were the peers themselves and the teachers highly satisfied with the project, but that they had also gained a greater insight. It became clear, however, that future supra-regional prevention projects would require even more preparation time than had been available for euro peers.

The evaluation of the project also produced the following results:

• The peer work was enhanced and stabilised. In many regions, this aroused specific interest in utilising peer group education in addiction prevention.
• It became apparent that the peers had to be chosen in a particularly transparent way in order to prevent any feelings of injustice arising among the other school pupils. The transfer of the peers’ experiences in the classes should be even more closely examined in further projects.
• Although the peer training achieved the expected results, it was observed, however, that the young people were not always entirely clear about their roles.
• The incorporation of the teachers in the projects proved to be particularly important, even if the projects were principally aimed at the school pupils. For future activities, a further training programme was suggested for teachers, which at many places has already been implemented in practice.
• The contents of the projects can be easily transferred at little cost by other interested professionals to other places and schools that have not been previously involved.
• The young people involved expressed considerable interest in meeting others at the European level. Therefore in 1998, the Austrian project partner conducted the first European peer meeting called LIFE EVENT.
